Hi friends, welcome back to Happi Plumbing. Let’s continue to see how to solve a recurring kitchen drain clog once and for all.

Our customer’s kitchen drain had been clogging three to four times every year. No matter how many times it was cleared, the problem kept coming back.

During our previous visit, we cleared the drain and performed a sewer camera inspection. That’s when we discovered a large amount of crushed eggshells inside the kitchen drain line.

Frustrated with the recurring clogs, the customer decided to replace the problematic kitchen drain piping to address the issue at its source.

Here’s how Happi Plumbing tackled the problem, step by step!

Step 1: Protecting the Customer’s Property

Using the location we had previously marked with our pipe locator, we first laid down protective tarps beneath the work area.

This helped keep the customer’s carpet, office desk, and surrounding furniture clean and protected from dust and debris while we opened the ceiling.

We also placed blue tape over the kitchen sink and faucet as a clear warning not to use them during the repair. Once the drain line was disconnected, accidentally turning on the faucet could have caused wastewater to spill into the home and damage the property.

Step 2: Opening the Ceiling and Identifying the Problem

After completing all the necessary preparations, we carefully cut an access opening in the ceiling to expose the kitchen drain line.

Using a level, we inspected the pipe’s slope and discovered that the overall pitch was insufficient. Even worse, there was a noticeable belly, or sagging section, in the middle of the drain line.

This low spot was allowing debris to settle and accumulate instead of flowing properly toward the main drain.

Based on our camera inspection, we suspected that a large amount of crushed eggshells had collected in this section.

Step 3: Removing the Problematic Drain Line

Next, we cut open the existing kitchen drain pipe.

And sure enough — we found a huge buildup of crushed eggshells sitting inside the pipe!

The eggshells had accumulated in the poorly sloped section of the drain, gradually restricting the flow of wastewater.

We removed all the affected sections of piping and prepared to install a new kitchen drain line.

Step 4: Installing the New Drain Line

With the old, problematic piping removed, we installed and connected the new drain line.

We carefully fitted and secured each section, making sure all connections were properly aligned and installed.

Step 5: Correcting the Slope and Eliminating the Belly

This was one of the most important steps of the entire repair.

Simply replacing the pipe would not have solved the underlying problem if the new drain line had the same improper slope.

We raised the upstream portion of the drain line and carefully adjusted each pipe hanger and support to eliminate the original belly.

Using a level, we verified that the new 2-inch kitchen drain line maintained a consistent downward slope of 1/4 inch per foot.

This allows wastewater to flow by gravity and helps carry food particles and other debris through the drain instead of letting them settle in low spots.

Step 6: Testing and Final Inspection

After completing the installation, we turned on the kitchen faucet and ran water through the new drain line.

We carefully inspected every connection to make sure there were no drips or leaks.

With the new piping installed, the belly eliminated, and the proper slope established, the kitchen drain was ready for normal use.

The Final Result

For years, this customer had been dealing with the same frustrating problem — a kitchen drain that clogged three or four times annually.

The combination of crushed eggshell buildup, insufficient pipe slope, and a sagging section of drain line had created the perfect conditions for repeated blockages.

Instead of simply clearing the drain again, Happi Plumbing addressed the underlying cause by replacing the affected piping and correcting the slope.

The customer was extremely happy with the result and finally had peace of mind knowing that the recurring drainage issue had been properly addressed.

And there was one more important lesson learned:

Never put eggshells down the garbage disposal again!

At Happi Plumbing, we don’t just clear clogs — we find out why they keep happening and work to fix the root cause.
